An estimated. 137 million working days were lost due to sickness or injury in the UK in 2016. Musculoskeletal problems contributed to the second highest reason for absence at 30.8 million days (22.4%)

(Office of National Statistics 2016)

The most common office worker complaints are in relation to the NECK, SHOULDERS & BACK

Musculoskeletal problems for office workers are often caused by inactivity rather than activity with people spending hours a day sitting stationary and hunched over in front of a desk. Prolonged poor positioning results in a buildup of pressure in the surrounding soft tissues.

Conditions such as sciatica, carpal tunnel, stiff necks, headaches, lower back pain and many more complaints can be eased with remedial treatment.

Stress & Posture

Stress and posture can even affect the way we breathe! Test it…

Close your eyes…Slump your back and shoulders and try to take a deep breath. Can you feel your chest move? Now sit up straight and roll your shoulders back. Take the same deep breath. Do you feel the difference in your ability to draw a deep breath through to your stomach?

From a slumped seated posture (the way that many of us sit at our desks)  our abdominal contents are compressed and push up into the chest cavity, where the lungs and the heart are. This forces us to take shallower breaths and to breathe into our chests, putting extra strain on our neck and chest muscles. We can’t get as much oxygen in each breath, so our breaths are short, quick, and shallow which all worsen when we feel stressed. This results in the muscles in our necks and chests feeling tight, tense, and overworked.

Soft tissue therapy can help to re-educate posture by strengthening weaker muscles and releasing tension from the tight ones.

Benefits to your staff include;

  • Improved muscle function
  • Reduced postural imbalances
  • Reduced tension and pain
  • Increased circulation
  • Increased joint mobility

I provide treatments that include massage, range of movement testing, soft tissue release, targeted strengthening.
